weekend warriors: comfort, style & no judgement allowed
outfits for people who can’t even on saturdays & sundays
I’m not even sure how I feel about this title, TBH. Warrior culture always feels super intense to me. Its values and customs usually revolve around combat skills, fighting, loyalty, discipline, courage, and more. I think about angrily screaming, “This is Sparta!” from the movie 300. I think I left my super intense warrior years with college athletics (intense is an understatement). Instead I try to constantly activate what I call peaceful warrior mode.
To me, a peaceful warrior is someone passionate and committed—but also someone who knows not everything in life warrants a reaction. There will be NO violence here.
I’ve been reading like 232 Substack posts lately, and one theme keeps popping up: the challenge of dressing casual. Many of us have nailed the “wear-to-work” look, but when it comes to standing on the sidelines of youth soccer while your kid is the goalie and the team is losing 6–0… outfit decisions suddenly feel complicated. SO STRESSFUL.
Often by the weekend, I’m so tired of getting dressed. I just want to exist in my messy bun, basketball shorts, and XL tank that says ARUBA: ONE HAPPY ISLAND on it. BUT, there are some days I do want to look a bit more put together. Like, the least amount of effort while still looking like a human. My mom once said to me, “You have so many nice pieces of clothing, you need to take the time to wear them!” Which was her secret code way of saying: “You have nice clothing, but you keep wearing the same ratty old lacrosse shorts from 2006.” I love my mom.
So, I investigated weekend dressing woes. I’ll share my favorite weekend (peaceful?) warrior pieces, how I wear them with minimal effort, and some amazing writers’ go-to pieces.
The goal: Give you ideas for when you actually WANT to get dressed, but remember: there is absolutely ZERO pressure to EVER wear anything that doesn’t feel right.
Wanna wear leggings because they’re comfy? YES.
Wanna wear college shorts because they’re sentimental? OKAY.
Wanna wear an oversized tank because it makes you feel good? YES QUEEN/KING, WE SUPPORT YOU.
The most important rule: live and dress authentically. To me, the people who have truly mastered that art are always the most stylish and interesting in the room
Alright, let’s march forward! This is a marathon, not a sprint, so conserve your energy, folks.
TOPS

OVERSIZED BUTTON-UPS - Wear with jeans, shorts, or satin pants; tuck any way you like.
SWEATSHIRT - Layered or tied around shoulders; reliable warmth on sidelines.
GREAT WHITE TEE - No notes & no relation to the Great White Shark —nothing beats a perfect white tee that fits just right.
SWEATER - Nothing makes me feel more put-together than a cozy, perfectly oversized sweater.
OUTERWEAR
SHIRT JACKET - A denim shirt jacket never fails + is incredibly versatile.
BLAZER - Blazers are basically superhero capes. The end.
WINDBREAKER1 - I love a good windbreaker (especially with a high neck) when I’m channeling Sporty Spice.
“FANCY” JACKET - Adds instant “polish” to any casual outfit.
BOTTOMS

JAMMIE PANTS - The only rules: elastic waistbands and the ability to eat a huge meal while staying comfortable (without Tums).
JEANS YOU LOVE - These are jeans that fit comfortably—you could run a lap around a track in them and still feel your best when you wear them.
SHORTS - Workout-friendly or casual weekend wear.
SHOES
FLATS - Comfortable, broken-in, non-blistering.
SNEAKERS - Stylish or sporty depending on purpose.
ACCESSORIES

BASEBALL HAT - For the days I am on day 4 hair and the dry shampoo is starting to struggle.
EASY JEWLERY - Jewelry that’s easy to toss on—and maybe even nap in.
SOCKS - Crew socks (bonus points for color!)
Here are 21 ways I’m wearing my weekend warriors on Saturdays & Sundays, when all I want to do is loaf and cry in a New York Jets jersey2 (we still haven’t recovered from the butt fumble of 2012).
I’ve got a few outfit selfies featuring different combinations of my favorite pieces from above. On the right-hand side, you can see which weekend warrior items are used in each look.
LOOKS 1-3
Casual and comfort are key with these. I’d probably wear them anywhere—from running errands and Ubering my kids around town to birthday parties, etc.
LOOKS 4-6
The red satin pants make these looks feel way more polished than they are. I love that they’re slightly cropped (I’m 5’6.5”). Look #5 is something I would absolutely wear to work and feel amazing in.
Looks 7-9

As FINDS By Ginny calls it - these looks feel very Sideline Mama. I’d wear these to youth soccer, hanging at the house, or a casual coffee with a friend (I’M AVAILABLE FOR INVITES).
I saw a Substack note floating around suggesting we retire the shirt-tied-around-the-waist. Respectfully, I’m not ready to say goodbye.
LOOKS 10-12

My husband saw me in these looks and said, “What’s up, Denim Dan?” After the backlash over his J.Crew dress critique last week, he kept the antics coming. I love mixing dark + light denim… but rocking full-on single-shade denim feels DANGEROUS (in a good way). The sweater over my shoulders keeps me from going full-on “Denim Dan,” I suppose. 🙄
Looks 13-15

Last week Kelly Williams crushed her post, Not-so-Compromising Compromises of Comfort & Style. She wrote,
“I used to be a huge proponent of wearing “hard pants” to feel put together. But I’ve officially been convinced that pull on pants can look really elevated even though they feel like pajama pants. I like styling them as I would a trouser pant, pairing with a structured jacket when going out.”
If Kelly Williams gives us the green light to embrace jammie pants in a polished way—WE EMBRACE JAMMIE PANTS IN A POLISHED WAY!
Looks 16-18
Still crushing hard on this secondhand Depop jacket. On its own, it adds major “WOW, I GOT DRESSED TODAY” energy—with barely any effort required.
Looks 19-21

We are sprinting to the finish line! Look 19 is SO me on the weekends. I wore it to soccer last weekend & my husband described me as “very sporty.” K. 😐
I love the idea of tossing a blazer over a tee and jeans—the footwear possibilities are endless: sneaker, loafer (sorry, I cheated new item alert), ballet flat, boot…the list goes on.
Lastly, when your hair is overdue for a wash, nothing beats a baseball hat.
Finish line in sight… surprise hill ahead! But it’s the best hill ever: our favorite writers, their weekend faves, and us sprinting through rainbows and unicorns to see what each of them loves!
Some brilliant writers, creators, and certified warriors are spilling their weekend-warrior favorites… because here, there’s absolutely NO gatekeeping!
TOPS
Emily Grady Dodge - Just For Fun - RicherPoorer Sweatshirt
My ultimate security blanket for all the weekend things has to be my grey sweatshirt from Richer Poorer. It has a tight waistband and is the perfect heathered grey for hiding a variety of coffee or other food related sins. I wear it with jeans or elastic waist pants and always feel good.
Elin Strong - Bang Voyage - Leset Margo Tee
I reserve my favorite tee in grass green for the weekends because it pulls triple duty: comfy enough for family park hangs, colorful enough to camouflage frosting fingers at yet another kid’s birthday party, and polished enough to wear on a brunch date. Whether with jeans, my go-to soft pants, or bermuda shorts, it’s undefeated in the mom-uniform lineup.Christina Cardy, DNP - Plan of Care - Beyond Yoga Dress3
I know people have mixed feelings about athleisure BUT I have worn this dress to soccer games, trampoline birthday parties (built in shorts!), hot-mom walks, coffee dates, the farmer’s market…she does it all. Built-in shorts + bra = zero undergarment stress. Soft, moisture-wicking, UPF fabric…I can do all of the things in all of the places while looking cute, feeling put together, and not sweating. And for the most-asked question: how do you pee? TMI, but honestly, I just pull the shorts to the side and keep it moving. 🤣
FINDS By Ginny - FINDS By Ginny - GAP Sweatshirt
I’m headed to grab coffee with a friend then going to watch my kid play tennis. I would wear a grey cotton crew neck sweatshirt- over a tee And I would spice it up, some track pants and jellies or suede shoes And don’t forget your sunscreen!Priscila Smith - Put Together by Priscila Smith - Gap Classic Poplin Shirt
My go-to weekend warrior is a button down shirt. I have a few favorites, but the Gap Poplin one seems to be my absolute favorite soccer games with Adidas shorts and Boston clogs, or dinner with track pants and ballet flats. I love the tall size for bit of drama (I’m only 5’4) and I hand-embroidered mine for a little extra texture because it just makes it feel like me.
BOTTOMS
Kelly Williams - Midimalist - AMO Elaine Pants
My weekend warrior must withstand soccer games that start in fall and end in summer (temperatures that is) while comfortably braving errands AND football watching on the couch. These pants from Amo Denim have risen to savior status because they have the vibe of a drawstring pant (my summer go-to) but are fit for fall weather. They are the most comfortable material that doesn’t bag out and they make me feel Zoe Kravitz cool. (CODE: KELLY15)Ariane Anusbigian - Just A Splash - Ruti's On The Loose Pants
My husband works every Saturday so I am on FULL solo parent mode half of every weekend. I love these pants (and feel like a broken record because I can't stop talking about/wearing them) because they're superrr comfortable, have pockets (a must for mom-ing), and are made from technical, easy-to-wipe-clean fabric (sticky toddler hands got nothing on 'em!) But also, they're just cool-looking and in this phase of life, I really appreciate when one item easily elevates the rest of my outfit. Less time thinking, more time doing! (CODE: ARIANE15)Danielle - An Unquenchable Thirst For Color - Old Navy Performance Skort
I have no idea what I’d be wearing on the weekends if it weren’t for my skort collection; my favorite one these days is an extra high-waisted micro-pleat skort from Old Navy. I like to wear black skorts with a fitted black tee and a colorful hoodie tied around my waist or this red Uniqlo tech jacket; they go great with jellies, sneakers, or my new Uggs x Tasman rain clogs (which I also highly recommend.)
Stephanie Johnson - The Green Apple - Everlane Drawstring Pants
If it’s the weekend, I’m not wearing pants with buttons, so I always reach for something loose, comfortable, breathable, but still elevated. My cost-per-wear on these Everlane draw-string linen pants is in the single digits at this point.Lee Alisha - Wearing On My Mind - Eileen Fisher Pants
I will never shut up about these Eileen Fisher pants (y’all don’t sleep on EF, the quality LASTS)! These are incredibly comfortable and keep you warm with its wool material. I’ve dressed these up and down and have even worn them around my apartment to lounge in.Charu - Brands And Bobs - COH Ayla Jeans
When I don’t know what to wear, or when I need to look put together but not like I tried too hard (ie weekend life), it’s almost always the COH Ayla jeans. I got them back in 2023 and at this point, the cost per wear is probably around a couple dollars. It’s the perfect length to wear with sneakers, sandals or flats and depending on the occasion, I pair it with a button down (Alex Mill, Chava Studio or Uniqlo are my current go to). When it gets cooler, I will add a sweater on top off the button down (COS, Chava Studio, or Babaa are my go to)Ariane - The September Edit - Aritzia The Effortless Pant
My style is pretty casual, but I like wearing something that instantly makes me feel more “put together.” These pants are a hero piece for me on weekends, when I can’t rely on fancier accessories or shoes. They’re as comfortable as sweatpants, look sophisticated, and can be dressed down with more casual tops. In summer, I swap them for the short version.Wardrobe Psyche - Wardrobe Psysche - Harris Tapper Irving Pant
My pick would be the Irving pant by Harris Tapper. The black colour and crepe fabric are robust enough to withstand the soccer field and hustling kids out the door. I’ll put them into sport mode by wearing them with my Salomons, a black sweatshirt and a white tee underneath, or if I’m feeling fancy I’ll wear them with an oversized shirt and brown loafers.Rin-On - To All The Clothes I’ve Loved Before - AYR Cutoff Shorts
My favorite weekend item is my white cutoff jorts (of course I had to pick jorts! It’s the first thing we connected over!) I love that they create a blank canvas. The combination of the optic white and the raw hem makes them perfect for dressing (relatively) up or down. I love wearing these for weekend brunches, short weekend trips and everything in between. Mine are from AYR (still available in most sizes on sale) - at first I hesitated because of the 4% polyester in the blend, but I swear they are the comfiest ever.
OUTERWEAR
Sigrid Djernæs - Sigrid’s Wardrobe Reflections - Uniqlo Windbreaker
One of my favourite pieces for weekend (and everyday to be honest!) is my Uniqlo windbreaker. It’s stylish while still practical, and works for going for a walk, running errands, as well as biking around Copenhagen. I love the greyish-green colour that works with most of my wardrobe. Unfortunately it’s sold out, but I believe they have similar styles.Sogole Kane - Another Fashion Newsletter - Co Rolled Collar Jacket (alt version)
Living in Southern California means we experience 4 microclimates in a day, so layering is essential to how I manage weekends. Growing up, my dad demanded that I carry “a light jacket” with me at all times, because even in the dead of summer, our evenings get chilly. So thanks Dad, for the fashion tip that has stayed with me for life! I now carry a light jacket with me everywhere, which especially comes in handy when I’m bouncing from tennis court sideline to the milk & eggs section of Costco (seriously HOW COLD does that one room need to be?!) to beachside lunch in Laguna to front porch drinks around our fire pit with neighbors. A light jacket is the only way I make it through it all!
ACCESSORIES
Fanny Adams - Always Overdressed - L.L. Bean Boat & Tote(s)
So it took me a minute to come up with a Weekend Warrior that isn’t my pajamas (these are my favorite, in case you’re wondering) but eventually landed on my L.L.Bean Boat and Tote(s). I have one in nearly every size, suitable for nearly every occasion, from being a Reluctant Sports Mom™ to the occasional date night.Maureen McLennon Welton - Intuitive Style - Ray-Ban Hexagon Sunglasses
Being not a parent, and also amidst a style transformation, my answer may feel a bit different from the rest! That said, nailing the right balance of relaxed and polished on the weekend continues to be a conundrum for me—what does one wear to the garden shop, where one inevitably gets wet or covered in dirt?? So while I’m still figuring out how to look like *me* on the weekend, having something familiar to lean on has been really helpful. For me, that’s a great pair of sunglasses! My favorite for over 10 years are metal-frame sunglasses, which add texture and great shape. I currently have two pairs from Ray Ban that I rotate in based on the vibe of the outfit (or, whichever one I can find, let’s be real!) Plus, I’d say they’re my signature—something I’m not often without. So when I’m exploring outfits that push me out of my comfort zone, having a familiar pair of sunglasses gives me confidence that I’m getting something right.Libby McCurrach - You Look Great - Monokel Sunglasses
One of my core beliefs is that everyone looks better in sunglasses so I wear mine as close to 24/7 as I can. My favorites are by a brand called Monokel, but I love them and when I briefly lost them, I panic ordered another pair and so now I have two (which is probably just planning ahead for when I lose them again). No chance I’m on a soccer sideline at 9 am without wearing these guys.Evonne Sturm - Musings of a Merchandiser - Colugo On The Go Organizer
Designed by my immensely talented friend Rob during his time as Cologu’s Creative Director, the “On the Go Organizer” is my weekend holy grail. He designed it for moms on the move, with space for everything and a strap that attaches easily to a stroller. I may just have a pup in tow, but this bag comes everywhere with me. Coffee runs, errands, dog walks and brunch are all better with it by my side. Worn as a crossbody, the Wild Child print gives any outfit the pop it needs. The bag somehow swallows a water bottle, two pairs of glasses, wallet, keys, gum, lip gloss and still has room to spare. Basically made for Mary Poppins. It is sold out on the brand’s website, but you can still snag it at Walmart.Tina Boetto - Semi Sustainable - Solbari UPF Hat & Lace Skirt
I have two weekend warriors that are the unlikeliest of duos: my UPF hat and sheer lace skirt. I live in a high UV index area, so you’ll usually find me in this enormous Solbari hat the minute I step outside during daylight hours (in addition to my favorite mineral sunscreen of course). I also love a dressy farmers market visit and my sheer lace skirt has gotten a lot of play this summer. While mine is a secondhand gem, this one and this one are close contenders.Jordyn Sharfe - The Hardware Store - Ray Ban Zuri Sunglasses
Sunglasses for me for weekend activities is a must! Lately, it’s definitely these Raybans Zuris. They’re classic but with a slight modernity to them in their square shape so they’re really easy to wear and basically make any casual weekend ‘fit outfit look finished.
SHOES
Lindsay Sword - Fashion Soup - Birkenstock Boston Clogs
My Weekend Warrior are my Birkenstocks, no question. Arizona in the summer. Boston in the Fall. With shearling and without. They take me from birthday parties and playdates (easy to slip off indoors) to the sidelines. They look great with shorts, sweats, and cuffed chinos. Just add an oversized button-down, a vintage sweatshirt, a roll-neck sweater, or a barn coat, and you’re good to go!Katelyn Cnossen - Spilling The Tea - Salmon Sneakers
Salomon Sneakers! My life is always go, go, go and I need a shoe that can keep up. I’ll pair my Salomon’s with anything from my GANNI tiger print skirt to track shorts or jeans. They play into my sporty persona and style. Plus I love a little juxtaposition when it comes to a shoe and an outfit.
Brittany Healy - Sunday Bagel - Tony Bianco Flats
For footwear, I need something comfortable but I don’t always want to wear sneakers. I present to you these perfect Mary Jane flats. They’re soft, they’re forgiving, and they’ll make you feel like the cool mom at the playground.

I regret not styling this windbreaker— but honestly, I got tired and I was sweating by the end. Sorry.
I often ask my husband if we can just switch teams considering being a NY Jets fan is quite depressing. He says no. Therefore, in protest, I declare that I just hope all teams have fun.
Technically a top & bottom.

How long did it take to write this actual masterpiece? The work you put into this was worth every second: it’s perfect. There is SO MUCH that is useful and beautiful and fun and interesting here.
Also one woman’s weekend wear is another woman’s any day wear? I feel like I have ideas for the next two months. So much inspiration from so many varied amazing writers. Thank you for this gem! 💎 and THANK YOU for including me. What a gift to me.
This was so fun! I loved how you styled everything. And I really hope shirts tied around the waist is ~not~ going out of style because I’m currently working on a post exclusively about that lolllllll. Let’s keep the vibe going forever!!!!
