My 6 Recent Hyperfixations
Currently Fixated: Check Back in a Week.
One of the things I love about this blog is that it gives me an outlet to ramble. Social media platforms like Instagram often feel constricting. I have so much I want to say—but rambling and long-winded content doesn’t sell. People prefer short, quick, bite-sized, “reel-like” content they can consume in a few seconds before scrolling to the next thing. If you don’t captivate your audience within three seconds—poof, they’re gone.
So, what is a hyperfixation? A hyperfixation is an intense, all-consuming focus on a specific activity, topic, or interest for an extended period. If you know me, you know I hyperfixate on a lot of things. Sometimes, it's an item, a hobby, or even a self-created belief—like the idea that everyone in the world secretly hates me.
I want to start by listing some of my most famous (or infamous) hyperfixations from my adult life:
Makeup Artist: On maternity leave, I turned 30. I decided that since I saw my first wrinkle, I was going to learn how to do an entire full face of makeup—highlighting, contouring, smoky eyes, you name it. To be honest, I looked pretty terrifying.
Home Decorator: One year, I decided I was going to turn my house into a Hallmark Christmas movie set. I should’ve bought stock that year in Target.
Food Snob: One time, I decided I was going to eat on a strict Paleo diet. If I couldn't recognize an ingredient, I refused to eat it. I also had a superiority complex and judged everyone who ate processed food. This didn’t last very long—I love cheese and bread.
Endurance Athlete: I go through random phases where I think I’m an Olympic athlete. Some random days, I wake up and decide I’m going to run a marathon. I buy all the equipment—headphones, gear, Gu packets—all to be eventually stored in a cabinet, ready to be disposed of. My Instagram algorithm becomes completely about running playlists, the best sneakers for endurance running, and how to refuel after a long run. Once the dopamine high wears off, I usually decide that I want to live a life of only doing Pilates.
Zen Master: Funny combination, right? After my best friend and I went to Sedona, I decided I had come home a new person. We took ONE yoga class there. I decided that now I was to become a yoga extraordinaire. Problem is, I can’t touch my toes and never have been able to since I came out of the womb. I also decided that the crystals we bought in Sedona were going to solve all my problems. Spoiler alert—I still have problems. Many problems.
The good news? Fashion and color coordination aren’t just a temporary hyperfixation for me—they're a long-standing passion.
That said, I do hyperfixate on styles, products, and specific items when I really love them.
Welcome to my six most recent hyperfixations! Let’s take a peek at what each item is, why I love it, and how I incorporate it into my wardrobe.
1. Oversized Button-Ups
I am very much on the bandwagon with this trend. They’re perfect for these transitional months and will also be great worn open in the summer with a pair of jeans or shorts. You can go for poplin fabric, which is ideal for now, or a linen material to prevent you from sweating profusely in the summer heat. I’m really leaning toward the linen fabric—mainly because I can fully tuck it in without feeling like I have a pool tube in my jeans.
I am a serial tucker-in-er of my shirts. Wearing them untucked and oversized is VERY hard for me. But I will slowly, but surely, find a way to embrace it. Maybe it will be a slow transition—starting with one side untucked, then, over time, letting the other side go (cringing as I write this). But in my mission to be a cool girl (aka an uncool mom who is trying hard), these are the risks I must take.

2. Amazon Silk Scarf & Mango Silk Scarf
I spotlighted my favorite Mango scarf last week, but this Amazon one might be even better. Let me explain. First, it’s bigger. A friend recently asked me, How do you pick a scarf online without seeing it? She was worried about getting one that’s too small.
My rule of thumb: look for a scarf anywhere in the range of 27 inches by 27 inches—give or take an inch. I love this size because it can be worn around the neck, draped over the shoulders of a shirt or jacket, or, if you’re feeling wild, tied around your head as you cruise in a red convertible into the sunset. I especially love this black and white one because the neutral colors make styling easy—plus, it has a hole in it. Yes, a hole! The hole makes it super easy to style by simply threading the other side through.

3. Sam Edelman Mules
I really wanted to find ways to subtly add pops of color to my outfits. I’m such a neutral girlie at heart, and this challenge is almost as hard as untucking my button-downs. Then I found these Sam Edelman mules, and they are exactly what I was looking for.
They’re a cool rhubarb color with a sleek, faux-snakeskin leather vibe—super chic and easy to pair with a diverse color palette.

4. Layering
Layering is truly an art. It can add depth and texture to an outfit and is also great for climate control when the weather can’t make up its mind. I love tossing a layer over my shoulders, like a blazer or sweater. Sometimes I just drape it over my shoulders, while other times I tie it. The other day at work, a colleague asked if they should close the door (they saw me come in with a blazer on my shoulders). I said, "No need—this look is all in the name of fashion."
I also think layering a silk scarf over a jacket is super cool. I’ve been seeing a lot of this in my fashion sleuthing, and I’m excited to try it out. As a self-proclaimed lover of all neutrals, this helps me add color, dimension, and interest to my look.
If my younger self could only see me now. I'll never forget when Mr. Anderson put me in the "puhpee woop chair" (I have no clue how to accurately spell this extremely chaotic chair) in third grade. I was secretly running into the classroom before recess and hanging up my jacket so I didn’t have to wear it outside. Well, I got caught and had to sit in that horribly shameful punishment chair. I’m not traumatized, but then again, maybe this explains a lot. My younger self would never believe that I actually choose to wear multiple layers now, all in the name of fashion.

5. Track Pants
We have officially entered an era where track pants can be worn as work pants. What’s next—leggings in lieu of trousers? If so, I’m not mad. I love that these can be worn with sneakers (Adidas Gazelles, duh) or even a ballet flat! I wore them to work this week, and they gave off a chic yet cool vibe. These were definitely a fashion risk for me—one worth taking. My greatest fashion risk will always be the all-black Juicy terry sweatsuit with Ugg boots and big hoop earrings from the 2000s.

6. Fringe Detail
A few years ago, I watched Yellowstone and immediately decided I needed to be Beth Dutton. My hyperfixation at the time? All things western—western boots, western jackets, and fringe, fringe, and more fringe. Life goal: Become more like Beth Dutton.
Well, as you already know, I’ve held on to these gems. Now that fringe and western vibes are trending, I am having so much fun—not just wearing them, but also spinning around and watching the little tassels fly.
Lesson learned, though: it’s not a good idea to go near my daughter while she’s using scissors if I’m wearing this jacket. Fringe can feel flashy, but listen, we’re not flappers. You can incorporate it boldly like those wild women of the ‘20s, or subtly, in a way that makes you feel both comfortable and confident.

That’s all for today! Looking forward to being back in your inbox early next week! Another random thing I hyperfixate over are fonts and document formatting. Therefore, I will leave you with a quick PSA: ALWAYS REDUCE YOUR MARGINS TO .5 ON ALL SIDES AND DO NOT BRING COMIC SANS AROUND ME—EVER.
