I Overthink Every Outfit, So You Don’t Have To | 04
Deep in a Fashion Rabbit Hole for Your Convenience.
So, I’ve learned that we’re all just a group of hyperfixators who happened to find one another. The number of people who messaged me and commented about Saturday’s post being super relatable was amazing. I find solace in knowing that my ability to hyperfixate on ridiculous things has helped everyone realize that this is, in fact, a safe space.
I’ve been thinking about so many other hysterical things I’ve hyperfixated on over the years, and I can’t wait to share them in my next post on the topic.
Now, let’s dive into our weekly What I Wore Last Week post. I’m going to walk you through the insane thought process I went through when planning these outfits.
One of the things you don’t see when I plan an outfit is the level of stress and overthinking that truly goes into it. I wish I could say it’s easy, but when you’re obsessed with details, it can be both a blessing and a curse.
Each night, my outfit planning process goes a little something like this…
3:00 PM – I get home from work. I decide that I’m hungry and start shoveling popcorn into my mouth. I think to myself, I really shouldn’t wait until super late to put my stuff together for tomorrow.
4:00 PM – I start making dinner because, well, we’re the 4 PM dinner crowd. Then, I do a quick workout, and while walking on the treadmill, I start listing all the things I need to do in my head. I remind myself again not to wait until it’s super late.
5:00/6:00 PM – I shower, get into my comfy clothes, and decide I want to loaf on a chair for longer than I care to admit. Then, instead of doing the immediate things I need to do for tomorrow, I randomly start wiping down all the counters (???). Then I start watching videos on baby goats. Eventually, I decide it’s time to watch a recorded show while eating vanilla bean ice cream. I glance at the clock, knowing I should get moving, but I don’t.
7:00/8:00 PM – I put the kiddos to bed and then detour into my bed to loaf a little longer. I’m convinced I have all the time in the world to do what I need to do. Then, I decide I need to finally respond to all of my friends and family after a two-day non-response period. About half an hour later, I finally get up and freak out because I forgot to make my lunch for tomorrow.
9:00 PM – I take another detour for a little more loafing. Then, urgency panic mode strikes. I start looking in my closet and pulling random things out. Then, I suddenly start wondering where a shirt is that I haven’t seen in months. This leads to a complete side quest to locate said shirt—digging through storage bins, throwing in a random load of laundry, rummaging through drawers, and pulling things out of my closet. The ironic part is that I have no intention of wearing this shirt tomorrow or anytime soon, but I must know its location, or I won’t be able to stop.
Then I randomly remember I need to pack my son’s instrument for “early morning band” tomorrow. If it’s not blocking the front door, I will not remember it. Serious question—if we selected percussion as an instrument, why does he carry a luggage-sized suitcase back and forth that’s bigger than my carry-on? Why can’t the xylophone or whatever it is stay at school?! We should’ve picked the tuba. I heard kids only have to bring the mouthpiece back and forth.
It’s so frustrating because, for the past 37 years, I’ve known what I need to do to be successful. My mom always says, 'I taught you how to navigate this!' But as my daughter once told her, 'Grandma, you just have to let Mom live.'
So, let me live, everyone.
Monday
The Zara track pants were everything I hoped they would be. It was finally my time to shine and show the world office meets athleisure. Jordan meets Anna Wintour. Everything went great except... it rained... and my shoes. I thought a pointy-toe shoe was the way to go. Upon reflection, this was not a good decision. An Adidas Gazelle or a more rounded ballet flat would have looked a million times better. Live and learn.

Tuesday
Such an example of look good, feel good, play good. These jeans are AMAZING and I’m not just saying that. I love a good wide-leg jean because they give the illusion of a trouser while wearing denim. I wanted to add a pop of color to my outfit to prove to the universe I am not a basic beige blogger. Adding the camel blazer gave it a really pretty finishing touch. The black belt matched the black boots. It was a good hair day, honestly, all was good in the world. Should’ve played the lotto.

Wednesday
Ahhh, the iconic lady jacket. I layered a black tank under it and wore it fully buttoned up. The neck scarf was STUNNING. It’s so big and can be worn in 1,523 different ways. I tossed on black loafers and my famous gold shell earrings to complete the look. I felt like the quiet luxury aesthetic puked all over me. I just don’t think anyone would ever describe me as quiet or luxurious. I overshare and am honestly just looking for a good sale. Fake it ‘til you make it!

Thursday
Thursday, I decided to shift my aesthetic to Western. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I love being able to use fashion to change who I am. It’s why I can’t come up with a good Instagram bio. I am like a chameleon—one day I want to dress like I live on a farm in Montana, while other days I want to look like Grace Kelly. Other days I miss the mark and my daughter is the FIRST to let me know.

Friday
Fun Friday. That’s what my kids have at school—why don’t adults have that at work? We could have a trivia tournament, a pet parade (employees can bring their pets in for the day), and a karaoke battle. I mentioned you can learn a lot about a person based on their "MRI" music selection. You can ALSO learn a lot about a person based on their karaoke songs. Here are my top four:
Celine Dion – It’s All Coming Back to Me Now
Nicki Minaj – Super Bass
Spice Girls – Wannabe
The Wizard and I - Wicked

Sunday
Remember - Saturday’s are for comfort. Sunday, I had to go to my son’s lacrosse game, so I wanted to look alive. The goal of this outfit was to be warm, but I did my best to incorporate interesting elements to make it look like I didn’t just roll out of bed. In all honesty, this outfit was inadequate because I was freezing.
